Why Don't My Lash Extensions Bond Properly?

One of the most frustrating issues for lash technicians is when lash extensions don't bond properly to the natural lash. Poor bonding can lead to extensions lifting, poor retention, and unhappy clients. The good news is that most bonding issues can be resolved by identifying the cause and making a few simple adjustments.

1. Your Lash Glue Isn't Fresh

Lash adhesive has a limited shelf life. Once opened, most adhesives perform best for around 4–8 weeks. Using old glue can significantly reduce its bonding strength.

2. The Natural Lashes Aren't Clean

Natural lashes need to be free from makeup, oils and dirt before application. Even a small amount of oil can prevent the adhesive from creating a strong bond.

Always cleanse your client's lashes thoroughly before every appointment and use a lash primer if needed to prepare the lashes for optimal adhesion.

3. You're Not Working Within Your Glue's Ideal Conditions

Every lash adhesive performs best within a specific temperature and humidity range. If your salon is too hot, cold, dry or humid, your glue may cure too quickly or too slowly.

Using a hygrometer to monitor your room conditions can help you achieve more consistent results and improve retention.

4. Not Enough Attachment to the Natural Lash

For the strongest bond, the lash extension should have good contact with the natural lash. If only the tip of the extension is attached, it is much more likely to lift or fall off prematurely.

Take your time to ensure each extension is fully attached along the natural lash where appropriate.

5. Using Too Much (or Too Little) Glue

The amount of adhesive matters.

• Too much glue can create bulky bonds and slow curing.
• Too little glue may not provide enough adhesion for a secure attachment.

Aim for a small, neat bead of adhesive that coats the base of the extension without excess product.

6. Your Glue Drop Is Too Old

As lash glue sits on your glue palette, it begins to cure.

Refreshing your glue drop every 15–30 minutes (or more frequently in warmer conditions) helps ensure you're always working with fresh adhesive.

7. Your Application Speed Doesn't Match Your Adhesive

If you're using a fast-drying adhesive but applying lashes more slowly, the glue may begin curing before the extension reaches the natural lash.
